The experience

The route starts at Goanikontes, the first freshwater oasis in the Swakop River, where date palms and olive trees planted generations ago still grow. From there the guide takes you into the Moonlandscape: a 400 to 500 million year old formation of lava and dolomite rock that has survived two ice ages. The terrain is stark enough that standing in it feels like standing on another planet, and the guide explains how the landscape formed and what it reveals about the earth's ancient past.

The heart of the tour is the Welwitschia Plains, where you walk among plants that have lived for up to 1500 years in one of the harshest environments on earth. The Welwitschia Mirabilis grows only in a narrow belt in this region, and only two leaves emerge from its stem: an adaptation so specific that botanists still study how it survives on just 15mm of rain per year. Fog is the main source of moisture, and the guide walks you through how these plants and the lichen fields that cover the desert have evolved to extract water from air alone. Lunch is included, and the tour operates with a live guide in English or German (German guides are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be guaranteed). Hotel pickup is included. If you're arriving by cruise ship, pickup begins an hour after docking, with departure no later than an hour and a half after that. The tour requires a minimum of 2 participants to run. If that threshold is not met, the operator will offer another date, a different experience, or a full refund.
