The experience
The tour starts at Walvis Bay Lagoon, a Ramsar-protected wetland where thousands of Greater and Lesser Flamingos gather along the shore. Pelicans, avocets and other migratory birds share the water, and the contrast of pink birds against the blue lagoon frames the first photos of the day. Just outside the lagoon sits the Pink Lake, a salt pan where algae thrive in high-salinity water and turn it a vivid pink: the color shifts with the sun and heat, so timing matters for the best light.
The route then heads inland to Dune 7, Namibia's tallest sand dune at over 380 meters. You can climb it for panoramic views across the Namib Desert or stay at the base and take in its scale. On the way, the tour stops at a Welwitschia Mirabilis plant, a living fossil that can survive over 1,000 years and grows only two leaves in its entire lifetime. The Moon Landscape follows: a surreal terrain of eroded rock formations shaped over millions of years, unlike anything else on the route.
In Swakopmund, the tour walks past German colonial landmarks: the Lighthouse (28 meters high, built in 1902), the ornate Hohenzollernhaus with its Art Nouveau façade, Woermannhaus (which now houses the public library and art gallery), the Altes Amtsgericht courthouse, and the Jetty extending into the Atlantic. The final stop is Mondesa township, where a guided walk or drive-through shows local street art, community projects and everyday Namibian life beyond the colonial town center. The full itinerary takes five to six hours.

What are the flamingos doing in Walvis Bay Lagoon?
Thousands of Greater and Lesser Flamingos gather along the lagoon's edge to feed in the shallow water. The lagoon is a Ramsar-protected wetland and one of southern Africa's most important birding sites, so you'll also see pelicans, avocets and migratory birds sharing the same water.
Can I climb Dune 7 or do I have to stay at the bottom?
Dune 7 is 380 meters high and you can choose to climb it for panoramic desert views or simply admire it from below. The choice is yours depending on your energy and time.
What makes the Pink Lake pink?
The Pink Lake is a salt pan where algae called Dunaliella salina thrive in the high-salinity water. These algae give the water its vibrant pink color, which is most striking on hot, sunny days. The area is part of Namibia's salt production industry.
What is the Welwitschia Mirabilis plant?
The Welwitschia Mirabilis is often called a living fossil and can live for over 1,000 years. It grows only in the Namib Desert and has just two long, ever-growing leaves in its entire lifetime, making it one of the world's oldest and most unusual plant species.
