The experience

The tour starts in the Namib Desert gravel plains, where you learn how plants and animals survive on moisture from fog alone. The Welwitschia Mirabilis plant (with only two leaves that tear in the wind) grows nowhere else and lives for over a thousand years. You stand in front of plants that were already ancient when European explorers first reached Africa. The landscape shifts to the Moonlandscape, a 400-million-year-old formation that looks like another planet, then to a water oasis that once sustained Swakopmund's early settlement.

The second half of the day heads south toward the coast. You pass Dune 7 and enter the Walvis Bay Lagoon, where pink salt lakes line the route and you may spot seals and jackals among the waders. Sandwich Harbour (where dune meets sea on a narrow strip of beach) is the climax: a roller-coaster drive up towering dunes with color contrasts the guide will point out, followed by a small game drive searching for desert wildlife. The route order (Welwitschia first or Sandwich first) depends on the tide, which the guide decides on the day.

The tour runs 7 to 8 hours and includes lunch, an air-conditioned vehicle, a live guide in English or German (German guides are allocated first-come, first-served and not guaranteed), and free pickup and drop-off at your hotel or the harbour. Cruise liner passengers board an hour after docking and must depart no later than an hour and a half after pickup. Late arrivals are marked as no-shows. A minimum of two participants is required to start. If the group is smaller, you get another date, a different experience, or a full refund.
