Step-by-step itinerary
4x4 tour across Namib Desert
- See flamingos at the Lagoon
- View Pink Lake at Salt Works
- Drive across Namib Desert dunes
- Stop to spot birds and animals
- Search for Namib Desert Web-footed Gecko
The experience
The tour starts at the lagoon near Walvis Bay, where flamingos gather in the shallows. From there you drive to the Pink Lake at the salt works: the water's colour shifts depending on the light and the algae blooming in it. Then the vehicle heads into the Namib Desert proper, where the dunes rise and the wind has carved them into ridges and hollows over centuries.
The 4-hour drive across the dune belt is the core of the day. Your guide stops whenever bird or animal life appears (jackal, oryx, gemsbok, ostrich), and when the conditions are right, you get out to search the sand for the Namib Desert Web-footed Gecko, a small lizard adapted to the heat and the loose ground. The stops break up the driving and give you time to move around and look. Light snacks and drinks come with you, and park fees are already covered in the price.
This is a shared tour with other travellers, and the vehicle does the work. You sit inside and watch the landscape roll past, then step out when something worth seeing appears. The guide's job is to read the desert and know where to look. Yours is to keep your eyes open and ask questions about what you're seeing.
What’s included

Is this one for you?You ride in a shared 4x4 with other travellers while the guide drives and stops for wildlife, so this suits anyone who wants to see the Namib Desert without handling the vehicle themselves. If you prefer to drive your own route or explore alone, a self-guided rental would work better.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (6 to 16 years); Child (2 to 5 years); Infant (under 2).
What animals might I actually see on the Namib Desert drive?
Jackal, oryx, gemsbok and ostrich are the wildlife most likely to appear during the 4-hour drive. The Web-footed Gecko lives in the dunes too, and your guide will stop to search for it when the sand conditions are right. Flamingos gather at the lagoon stop at the start of the tour.
How long is the actual driving time across the dunes?
The drive across the wind-sculpted dune belt lasts approximately 4 hours, though the tour includes stops when animals are spotted or when you get out to search for the gecko, so the total time on the tour is 4 to 5 hours.
What is the Pink Lake and why does it look that colour?
The Pink Lake sits at the Walvis Bay Salt Works. The water's colour comes from algae and microorganisms that thrive in the salty water, and the shade shifts depending on the light and which species are blooming at the time.
Does the tour include food and water?
Light snacks and drinks are included in the tour price. Park fees are also covered, so there are no extra charges for entry to the Namib Desert areas you visit.
