The experience

The tour leaves Walvis Bay and crosses the Kuiseb River Delta on the way south, then moves onto the beach and dunes toward Sandwich Harbour. What was once a whaling port silted up decades ago and is now a shallow lagoon known for holding as many as 250,000 birds. The drive itself is the draw: giant dunes run straight into the Atlantic, and the 4x4 is built to handle the sand and tidal flats that make the route impassable on foot or by regular vehicle. Tide and weather decide whether the full route to the lagoon is open on any given day.

The guide stops to look for local wildlife and points out desert fauna and flora along the way. You picnic in the sand before the return journey follows the same route back to Walvis Bay. The whole outing takes four hours. The Walvis Bay Salt Refinery is also visible during the tour, a working industrial landmark that frames the scale of the coastal landscape. All surfaces are wheelchair accessible, and the vehicle itself is set up to carry passengers with mobility needs.
