The Experience

The tour leaves the Walvis Bay harbor or your guest house and heads first to the flamingo lagoons in the Walvis Bay lagune, a Ramsar-protected site. The drive along the shore grows more remote as the dune belt closes in from the left and the ocean holds the right. Entry into Sandwich Harbor itself is tide-dependent and often difficult—that unpredictability is part of what makes it. Once you reach it, the landscape narrows to something stark: towering dunes on one side, sea on the other. The vehicle climbs the high dunes to a viewpoint, then drops into an exhilarating dune ride that hunts for whatever life the desert holds—tiny shovelnose lizards dancing on the hot sand, oryx struggling through the harsh conditions, the salt pans and open spaces where nobody else is in sight.

The return follows the salt pans back to the shore and Walvis Bay, where you are dropped at the harbor or your guest house as arranged. The whole loop takes around four and a half hours.
