The experience
Four to five hours means you start at Walvis Bay Lagoon, where flamingos and pelicans gather before the route crosses the Kuiseb River delta and salt pans. The 4x4 climbs into Namib Naukluft Park, and the guide stops to point out wildlife (springbok, oryx, ostrich, jackals, geckos) before reaching the dunes that rise above Sandwich Harbour. The viewpoint sits where the desert edge meets the Atlantic, and this is where the landscape shifts from what you expected.
Midway through, your guide sets up a picnic on a dune. The shelter breaks the wind, and the spread includes light snacks, soft drinks, bottled water, beer and sparkling wine. It is not a rushed meal. It is built into the day. All National Park permits are already paid, so there is no queue or paperwork at the gate.
Small groups mean you are not competing for the guide's attention or space in the vehicle. The 4x4 itself handles terrain a regular car cannot cross, and the driver knows where the wildlife stops and which dunes offer the best angle to the ocean. Service animals are welcome.
