Step-by-step itinerary

4x4 drive to Pelican Point Peninsula

  • Drive from Walvis Bay Lagoon
  • View pink salt lakes and wildlife
  • Stop for photos and wildlife viewing
  • Visit Pelican Point Lighthouse
  • See Cape Fur Seal colonies
  • Enjoy snacks and drinks at beach

The experience

The drive starts from Walvis Bay and heads toward Pelican Point along the lagoon edge, where flamingos and pelicans gather in the shallows. You'll pass the pink salt pans (the water really does turn that color from the algae and mineral content), and spend roughly an hour on the route before reaching the lighthouse. The 4x4 vehicle handles the sand and gravel tracks that a regular car cannot, which is what opens up the inland route through the salt mines instead of keeping to the main road.

At Pelican Point Light House, thousands of Cape Fur Seals haul out on the rocks and beach, and the sheer density of them (the noise, the movement, the smell) is something no photo quite captures. You'll have time to walk the isolated beach where the birdlife is dense, and snacks and drinks are served here while you take in the views of the peninsula. The guide speaks English or German and can answer questions about the seals, the lagoon ecosystem and what you're seeing in the salt pans.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup from Walvis Bay.
  • a live guide in English or German.
  • snacks and beverages at Pelican Point.
  • stops for wildlife viewing along the lagoon and salt pans.

What's the difference between the pink salt lakes and regular salt pans?

The Walvis Bay salt pans turn pink because of algae and minerals in the water. You'll see them from the vehicle as you drive through. They're part of the same salt mining operation, but the color shift happens in certain ponds depending on the water chemistry and time of year.

Is the drive rough, or can anyone handle the 4x4 tracks?

The 4x4 vehicle is built for sand and gravel, but the ride itself is steady. The tour suits all fitness levels. It's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, and children under two are not advised to join.
