The experience
The day splits into two halves: Tetouan first, then Chefchaouen. After pickup, you drive an hour to Tetouan and walk through its new town before entering the medina at Boulevard Mohamed V. The route passes the Mechouar (Royal Palace), cuts through the Mellah quarter into the walled city, and moves through a berber market selling traditional women's clothing. You walk until reaching Bab el Oukla, then drive back toward Tangier. The medina itself is medieval, layered with centuries of narrow streets and the rhythm of daily life.
Back in Tangier, the second half focuses on the city's own medina and its modern history. You see the outskirts first, then enter the walled old town to visit the Saint Andrews English church and the Gran Socco square: the plaza where Mohamed V delivered his speech on April 9th, 1947, calling for North African independence. The tour moves through the fruit and vegetable market, the dry fruits market, and the medina's narrow passages before ending at a typical café in Socco Chico square, where you sit down for mint tea. From there, the driver takes you back to your hotel or the port.
An air-conditioned vehicle handles the driving between towns. The guide speaks English, Spanish or French throughout, and the pace mixes walking with stops for orientation and history. Families with infants are welcome. Children can ride in a stroller through the medina sections, though the narrow streets and market crowds mean some stretches will be tight. The tour suits all fitness levels, though the medina walks are on uneven, sloped ground typical of old Moroccan cities.

How long is the drive from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
The drive to Tetouan takes about an hour. From there, the route continues onward to Chefchaouen. The full tour runs six to eight hours total, including all walking, stops and the return journey.
What is the Gran Socco square and why does the tour stop there?
The Gran Socco (also called 9th of April square) is where Mohamed V delivered a speech on April 9th, 1947, calling for North African independence: a pivotal moment in Morocco's history. The tour includes it as a landmark of the medina and a place where locals and visitors gather.
Will I walk much in the medinas, or is most of the day driving?
The tour is built around walking through both Tetouan's and Tangier's walled cities. You walk through markets, narrow streets and historic quarters in each town. The driving connects the two destinations and takes you between the new town and medina in each place.
Does the tour include lunch or meals?
The tour ends with mint tea and a sit-down break in a traditional café in Tangier's Socco Chico square. Lunch is not included. You can eat at cafés or restaurants in either medina during the walking sections if you wish.
What is Chefchaouen's medina actually like when you arrive there?
Chefchaouen's medina is painted in shades of blue and sits in mountainous surroundings. The main square is lined with cafés and filled with locals and tourists. The relaxed atmosphere and the contrast between the bright painted buildings and the landscape are what draw most visitors to the town.
Is the tour wheelchair accessible?
The tour is wheelchair accessible. All areas and surfaces in the medinas visited are accessible, and the vehicle is wheelchair accessible. However, the medinas themselves contain narrow, uneven streets typical of old Moroccan cities, so accessibility varies by specific route within each walled town.
