"Nothing changes here," our guide said as we stepped into the medina, and he wasn't being poetic. The streets of Chefchaouen really do feel frozen — every wall painted that particular sky blue, every corner looking like it did a hundred years ago. The drive from Tangier takes you through the Rif Mountains, past Berber villages and small roadside markets, and somewhere around the halfway point you stop for coffee. By the time you arrive in the blue city itself, you've already seen a different Morocco than most tourists get.

The walking tour moves through Place Outa el Hammam first — the main square where locals still gather — then into the Kasbah Museum, which sits right there in the old fortress. After that you're loose in the medina, wandering the blue-painted streets and narrow passages that genuinely do feel like stepping into a documentary about Moroccan history. There's no rush. You see Ras el-Maa Waterfall, which drops into a small pool where the water is cold and clear.
