The Experience

The first thing that happened was our driver, Youssef, asking if I wanted to play my own music on the van’s speakers. I didn’t expect that — Moroccan pop mixed with my playlists as we left Tangier behind. The road curled through green hills and then the mountains started rising up, all misty in the morning. We stopped at this little roadside spot above Nakhla Lake. The guy behind the counter poured mint tea so strong it made my eyes water (in a good way), and I just stood there with my cup watching birds skim the water. A couple of locals nodded hello but mostly everyone seemed half-asleep. It felt like pausing in someone else’s morning routine.

Chefchaouen really does look blue — not just the walls but even the light bouncing off them feels different. Our guide, Fatima, met us at one of those tiny archways into the medina and immediately started pointing out things I’d never have noticed: old Spanish tiles half-hidden under paint, a cat sleeping on a step where she said her grandmother used to sell olives. She taught me how to say “shukran” properly (I still probably butchered it). The souks were loud but not pushy; you could hear someone hammering copper somewhere nearby and smell cumin drifting out of a doorway. There was this moment when we turned a corner and suddenly everything went quiet except for some distant laughter — I still think about that silence.

I wandered off after the tour ended (Fatima said “get lost, it’s part of the fun here”), found myself near Ras el-Maa waterfall where kids were splashing around and old men played cards on a bench. Lunch wasn’t included but I grabbed a tagine at a café with chipped blue tables — nothing fancy but honestly perfect after all that walking. When it was time to head back to Tangier, I realized my shoes were dusted blue too. Not sure why that made me smile.
