The experience

The Kasbah sits on the hill overlooking Tangier, a fortress palace built by the Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century with gardens that still stand. Your guide leads you through the complex, then down into the Medina's narrow streets where the layout has barely changed in centuries. Petite Socco, the square at the heart of it, was once crowded with the offices of writers, businessmen and diplomats. Now it fills with cafes and the energy of the market itself.

The route takes you through workshops where artisans still make the goods you see in the souks (leather, metalwork, textiles), and into the markets themselves, where the colors and the noise are the point. You can stop to shop for souvenirs, and at lunch time your guide can point you toward one of the most varied cuisines in the world. The Kasbah Museum entry is included. The American Legation Museum, a few blocks away, charges a separate fee if you want to see it.
