The Experience

I didn’t expect Tangier’s old town to smell like oranges and salt air all at once. Our guide Youssef met us right by the 9th of April square—he waved with two fingers and grinned like he already knew we’d get lost in these streets. The first thing I noticed was how the light bounced off the whitewashed walls, then disappeared into alleyways that felt almost secret. We passed a bakery where someone handed out rounds of warm bread—Youssef called it khobz—and I swear I could’ve eaten three on the spot.

We ducked into the Ibn Battouta museum (I only half-remembered who he was until Youssef started telling stories about his travels). There was this quiet in the room with his tomb—just a low hum from outside and the faintest scent of incense. After that, we wandered to Dar el Makhzen in the Kasbah. The view over the Mediterranean hit me harder than I thought it would. You can see Spain on a clear day, apparently. My phone photos don’t do it justice, but I still look at them sometimes.

Café Hafa was next—a place you’d miss if you didn’t know to look up for blue-painted steps. We sat with mint tea (sweet enough to make your teeth ache) and watched ferries crawl across the water below. Some older men played cards nearby; one winked when I tried my best “shukran.” There were so many layers to this day trip Tangier walking tour—markets full of color, a synagogue tucked behind an unmarked door, even Roman tombs just sitting quietly above the city.

I got couscous for lunch (Youssef said his mother makes it better), and we stopped at a café from 1813 for another round of tea. By then my legs were tired but I didn’t really want it to end.
