The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the smell — wild thyme and something sweet drifting in through the window as we wound up the Honey Road. Our driver, Youssef, pointed out a cluster of beehives tucked into the red hills. It was quieter than I expected, just the hum of bees and our tires crunching on gravel. We stopped by a riverbed where some kids were skipping stones and an old man offered us a taste of his honey (I bought a tiny jar — still have it). The air felt cooler here, a little sticky but fresh, like you could almost drink it.
I kept thinking Paradise Valley sounded too dramatic, but honestly, there’s something about those palm-lined pools that makes you want to sit and do nothing for a while. We took a slow walk along the water — not really hiking, more like wandering and talking about nothing much. Our guide told us how locals come here on hot weekends to swim and picnic. There were families unpacking oranges and bread under the trees; one woman waved at us with her hands covered in henna. I tried to catch the names of some birds but forgot them right away. So yeah, it’s peaceful in that way where you forget what time it is.
Taghazout was louder — in a good way. You can hear the sea before you see it, all tangled up with music from cafés and someone tuning a surfboard on the curb. The streets are narrow and painted every shade of blue you can imagine (and some you probably can’t). We wandered past shops selling boards and woven baskets, then squeezed into a tiny restaurant where they served grilled fish that tasted like it had never seen a fridge. Our guide laughed when I tried to pronounce “chermoula” — I’m still not sure I got it right.
On the drive back toward Agadir, sunburned and full of mint tea, I watched surfers paddling out as dusk crept in. There’s no big moment where everything clicks; just small ones that stick around after you’re home again.
