A guided day trip from Marrakech to Ouzoud Falls in the High Atlas Mountains, 150 km east, where you walk through Berber olive groves, descend into the gorge and stand at the base of the 110-meter cascades. The route takes you down to the pool, then back up past grain mills at the top, with time to swim and photograph the falls from multiple angles. The Experience

The minivan leaves your Marrakech hotel in the morning and travels east through rural Morocco for about two hours to reach the falls. On arrival, the walk begins through olive groves tended by generations of Berber farmers—the terraced trees frame the gorge as you descend the stone steps toward the water. The path is steep but walkable, and the guide points out the grain mills built into the rock face that gave the falls their name.

At the base, you stand in front of the three-tiered cascade pouring into a pool. The water is cold and clear. You can wade in, swim if you want, or stay dry and photograph the falls from the rocks and the riverbank. A boat operator offers rides close to the cascades for an extra fee—close enough to feel the spray. Afterward, walk to one of the cafes or restaurants overlooking the river; they serve lunch (not included) and give you a place to rest before the climb back up.

The return path takes you past different vantage points of the falls and the mills, so you see the cascade from above as well as from below. The full day is about nine hours from pickup to drop-off, with the walking and the time at the falls built into that span. Children from age 2 are welcome, and the guide speaks your language—English, Spanish or French.
