Open-air sidecar ride reveals Marrakech’s secret rhythms and old stories

You’ll ride shotgun in an open-air sidecar through Marrakech’s Gueliz district, winding alleys of the Medina, and out into the palm grove—with a local guide sharing stories as you go. Expect laughter, unexpected moments (like that clock shop), plenty of color and scent, plus all gear included for an easygoing adventure you’ll remember long after.

Step-by-step itinerary

Tailor-made sidecar ride in Marrakech

  • Start 1.5-hour sidecar ride
  • Explore Medina's authentic neighborhoods
  • Visit Gueliz district's Art Deco sites
  • See Kasbah and Mellah districts
  • Pass through Bad El Khemiss flea market
  • Discover the palm grove oasis

The Experience

We swung our legs over the sidecar just outside Gueliz, helmets a little wobbly but spirits high. The engine’s low rumble mixed with the call to prayer drifting from somewhere behind a row of faded Art Deco facades. Our guide—Youssef—grinned in the mirror, asking if we wanted to see “the real Marrakech or the green edge?” I just said yes. We zipped past the old cinema (I swear you could still smell popcorn if you tried), sunlight flickering through jacaranda trees. There was this moment at a dusty clock shop where an old man waved, his hands stained with grease, and Youssef told us how his father fixed watches here during the French Protectorate. I didn’t expect that part to stick with me.

Turning into the Medina felt like slipping into another century. The air changed—spicier, thicker—and suddenly we were weaving past carts stacked with oranges and kids chasing each other between mopeds. In Mellah district, Youssef pointed out a synagogue tucked between two crumbling walls; he said his aunt used to buy saffron at the Thursday market in Bad El Khemiss. I tried saying “shukran” to a woman selling mint and she laughed at my accent but handed me a sprig anyway. My hands smelled fresh for hours after.

The last stretch took us out toward the palm grove, where everything slowed down—the light got softer and you could hear birds instead of horns. Youssef explained how these palms fed Marrakech for centuries thanks to underground irrigation tunnels. It’s wild thinking about water running under your wheels while you’re surrounded by so much dust and green at once. We stopped for bottled water in the shade; it tasted colder than usual somehow.

I keep replaying that feeling of wind on my face as we cruised back toward town—half exhilarated, half content. If you’d told me an hour and a half would feel like time-travel (with pickup and all), I wouldn’t have believed it. But here we are.

What’s included

Your day includes use of helmets (with hair nets), bottled water for refreshment along the route, rain gear if needed, live commentary from your multilingual local insider or driver throughout Gueliz, Medina or palm grove stops, plus access to all sites visited along your tailor-made itinerary before returning after about ninety minutes on the road.
