The experience

The day starts before sunrise. A 4x4 picks you up at your Marrakech hotel in the dark and drives you to the launch site while you wake up inside the air-conditioned vehicle. On arrival, the crew has pastries, tea and coffee waiting while they prep the balloon: a chance to settle your nerves and watch the experienced team work. The basket holds up to 16 people, so you have room to move and photograph without crowding.

Takeoff happens as the sky begins to lighten. You rise into the still air and drift over rocky valleys, desert floor and the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. The pilot steers the balloon to catch the sunrise hitting the peaks and ridges in gold, orange and pink. There's no engine noise, no jostling. Just the sound of the burner and the view expanding below you. You float for roughly an hour, long enough to watch the light change and the villages wake up on the ground.

After landing, a 4x4 takes you to a traditional Berber tent set up with low seating and a view back toward the mountains. Breakfast is cornbread, pancakes, olives, fresh fruit and mint tea: the kind of meal that tastes different when you've just watched the sun rise from the air. You'll receive a flight certificate before the drive back to your hotel, which closes out the morning.
