You’ll start your morning in Marrakech before sunrise with hotel pickup and coffee while your hot air balloon is prepared. Drift over desert hills and Atlas Mountain foothills as dawn breaks, then land for a Berber breakfast in a traditional tent. Expect small moments of warmth—mint tea shared with locals, laughter over pancakes—that linger long after you return.
I woke up in Marrakech before the call to prayer, still half-asleep, and shuffled into the 4x4 waiting outside my riad. The city was quiet—just a few cats darting around—and our driver nodded hello but didn’t say much. I remember the smell of mint tea wafting from a thermos as we bumped along toward the launch site. It was cold enough that I could see my breath, which surprised me for Morocco. The crew was already there, moving around quietly, unrolling this massive patchwork balloon that looked almost too big to ever leave the ground.
We stood around with coffee and these flaky croissants (honestly better than I expected), watching the balloon slowly come alive. Our pilot, Youssef, joked about how many times he’s done this—“but every sunrise is different,” he said. Climbing into the basket felt awkward at first—everyone sort of giggling nervously—but then suddenly we were off the ground and it was silent except for the occasional whoosh of fire above our heads. The Atlas Mountains started glowing pink way out on the horizon, and you could see tiny Berber villages scattered below us like little clusters of white cubes. Someone pointed out goats moving along a ridge; I’m not sure how they saw them from so high up.
The landing was softer than I’d imagined (I braced for impact but just sort of bounced). Afterward, we piled into a low Berber tent set up near where we landed—rugs everywhere, warm bread and pancakes on big platters, olives and sweet oranges. Our guide poured mint tea from high above the glasses; he laughed when I tried to copy him and nearly spilled it all over myself. There was this quiet happiness in sharing breakfast with strangers after floating together above Morocco—I still think about that view sometimes when I’m back home making regular old toast.
Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off by 4x4 vehicle from Marrakech, pre-flight coffee and fresh pastries while your hot air balloon is prepared, an aerial journey above Atlas Mountain foothills at sunrise with an experienced pilot guiding you, followed by a Berber breakfast served in a traditional tent after landing—and you’ll head home with a flight certificate tucked into your bag.
