The Experience

Fatima handed me a glass of mint tea as soon as we stepped into the argan cooperative in Azrou — I think she noticed I was still half-asleep from the drive out of Marrakech. The place smelled like roasted nuts and something sweet I couldn’t quite name. Our guide Youssef grinned at my clumsy “shukran,” then explained how the women here press argan oil by hand. There was laughter when someone in our group tried to grind the kernels (it’s harder than it looks). I didn’t expect to feel so welcome right away.

The road kept climbing into the Atlas Mountains, past stone houses and kids waving from doorways. The air got cooler, sharper — not cold exactly, just fresh in a way that made me want to keep walking. In the Imlil Valley, we started our hike. It wasn’t long or hard (about an hour and a half), but every turn had something new: goats scrambling up rocks, old men sitting under walnut trees, little bursts of wildflowers along the path. Youssef stopped often to point out things — he knew everyone, or maybe everyone just knows him here.

Lunch was in a Berber village house with low tables and bright rugs. The bread was warm from the fire and there was this tangy tomato salad that’s probably ruined me for supermarket tomatoes forever. Someone’s grandmother peeked in to check if we needed more tea. On Saturdays you get to wander through the local market in Asni — it’s noisy and messy and smells like oranges and sheep wool all at once.

The waterfall itself isn’t huge but standing close enough to feel the spray on your face after dusty trails felt good. We lingered there longer than planned; nobody wanted to rush back to Marrakech just yet. Sometimes you get these flashes of quiet up there — just water, birds, wind — that stick with you even after you’re back in city traffic.
