The experience
The drive from Casablanca takes three hours on the highway, ending at the Argan Cooperative in the largest Argan forest in Morocco. There you watch women of the cooperative at work pressing the oil by hand. The process that has supplied the region for centuries. The guide explains the ritual and the economics as you move through the workspace, then the route continues to Essaouira itself, a port city built on a rocky peninsula that the Alaouite Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah founded in the 18th century. The ramparts face the Atlantic. The medina behind them is painted in white and blue.
In the harbor, small restaurants grill sardines outdoors while fishers repair red nets on the docks. You walk past the Sqala du Port, a crenellated bastion that once guarded the city, and enter Moulay Hassan square to reach the Kasbah: a walled district whose ramparts you follow to the Sqala of the Kasbah, where the city's famous cannons still line the walls. This spot was chosen by Orson Welles for the exterior sets of his film Othello. At the heart of the Kasbah sits the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, which holds the musical instruments of the Aissaoua, Hamadcha and Gnaoua brotherhoods. The Gnaoua Festival, held every June, draws musicians from across the world. You also stroll the old medina Mogador and the old Jewish Quarter before the guide returns you to your hotel in Casablanca.
