You’ll ride gentle horses through Essaouira’s forests past goats and camels, cross wild dunes and splash along empty Atlantic beaches with a local guide. Includes hotel pickup and all gear — just bring long pants and let yourself get a little windswept by Morocco’s coast.
The first thing I noticed was the salty wind — you know that smell when the sea mixes with horses? That’s what hit me as we got out near the stables, just outside Essaouira’s medina. Our guide, Youssef, handed me a helmet and grinned like he’d seen a hundred nervous riders before. He asked if I’d ridden much (not really), then matched me with this patient brown mare who seemed to know her job better than I did. The saddle felt stiff at first but after a few minutes, it was just part of the rhythm.
We started in the forest. There were goats everywhere — one even tried to nibble my shoelace, which cracked Youssef up. We passed camels chewing lazily under the trees and kids waving from behind a donkey cart. The path twisted through patches of sunlight and eucalyptus scent; sometimes I could hear the Atlantic before I saw it, this low hush behind the birds. At one point I tried to say thank you in Arabic (“shukran!”) and probably messed it up — Youssef just smiled wider.
The dunes came next — big, sandy hills that looked soft but actually felt kind of crunchy under the hooves. My horse picked her way down carefully while more experienced riders got to canter ahead on the flatter stretches. Then suddenly we were on the open beach, wind whipping my hair into my mouth (should’ve tied it back). We rode right up to where the waves fizzed around our horses’ legs. Gulls shouting overhead, wet sand shining like glass… honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small and free at once. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve done it.
Afterwards we looped back toward the stables with sand stuck in my shoes and my jeans creased from holding on too tight. Youssef offered sweet mint tea before driving us back into Essaouira — he said something about how every ride is different because of the tides or light or mood of the horses. I keep thinking about that view down the empty beach, sun low over the Atlantic, and how for two hours nothing else really mattered.
Your day includes hotel pickup from anywhere in Essaouira (or a meeting point if needed), all rides led by a local multilingual guide who adapts to your experience level, use of safety helmet throughout your time on horseback across forest trails, dunes and beach stretches — plus drop-off back at your accommodation afterwards.
