The experience

The ride starts with round-trip transport from your Essaouira hotel to the stables in Diabat, a coastal village 3 km from the Medina. Once there, your guide meets you and matches you with a horse suited to your experience level. The loop winds through shaded trails where you might spot grazing goats, sheep and camels before the landscape opens onto sweeping sand dunes that hug the coast. From there you ride out onto the expansive beaches of the Atlantic.

The two-hour ride takes you into the ocean itself: your horse steps into the waves, and if you book the sunset departure, you'll watch the light turn gold and orange across the water and sand. Experienced riders can trot or gallop along the shore during the open stretches. The pace adapts to your level. The guide leads you back to the Diabat stables before the smooth return journey to your hotel.

You'll need long trousers and closed-toe shoes for riding comfort and safety. Helmets are mandatory and provided. The activity suits all skill levels, though it does require moderate physical fitness, and riders must be at least 10 years old and weigh no more than 85 kg.
