Summary

Sunset horse ride by Sultan’s palace & wild Atlantic beach

You’ll ride Barb or Arabian horses along Essaouira’s wild coast at sunset, guided by locals who know every dune and eucalyptus grove. Expect glimpses of dromedaries, cows, ancient palace ruins, and that endless Atlantic horizon. The pace fits your comfort — walk or gallop — with all riding equipment provided for an easygoing adventure you’ll remember long after dusk.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about getting on a horse again — last time was at some birthday party when I was ten. But in Essaouira, the light gets syrupy gold right before sunset and something about the air (salty, cool, with that hint of eucalyptus) made it feel like the right time to try. Our guide, Youssef, just grinned and handed me the reins like he’d done this a thousand times. He probably has. The horses — Barb and Arabian breeds — looked calm but you could tell they had their own personalities. Mine kept flicking his ears back at me like he wanted to know if I was up for it.

We set off in a small group, no more than five of us plus Youssef, and the pace was gentle at first. The sand under hoof felt soft and a bit springy — not what I expected. There were cows chewing lazily near the dunes, and at one point a line of dromedaries wandered past so close I could smell their dusty fur. We passed through this patch of eucalyptus trees where everything suddenly smelled sharp and green; someone behind me sneezed and we all laughed. The Sultan’s palace ruins appeared almost out of nowhere, just crumbling stone against that huge sky.

The best part? When we reached the top of a dune overlooking the wild Atlantic beach. The sun was dropping fast, painting everything orange and pink. Youssef asked if anyone wanted to try trotting or even galloping — two people did (not me). Their horses kicked up sprays of sand that caught the light in these little golden sparks. I just sat there for a second listening to the wind and waves crashing way below us. It’s strange how quiet it can be even with other people around.
