The experience
The drive from Tangier cuts through the Rif Mountains into Chefchaouen, a city built on steep slopes and painted in shades of blue. A local guide meets you on arrival and walks the medina (the narrow alleys, the hidden corners, the way the light falls on the walls) before you have time to get lost. The guide introduces the history and the layout, then steps back: you get both the context and the freedom to wander.
The Spanish Mosque sits on a hilltop overlooking the city and the mountains beyond. From there, the route moves through Place Outa el Hammam, the central square where cafes and shops line the edges, then to the Kasbah Museum, an 18th-century fortress with gardens and exhibits on the region's past. The Grand Mosque, recognizable by its octagonal minaret, anchors the religious landmarks. Ras el-Maa Waterfall appears twice in the day, once early in the guided section, once later when you have time to return if you choose.
