The Experience

An air-conditioned car picks you up from your hotel in Marrakesh and drives you to Agafay Desert Camp. Once there, you ride a camel across the sand as the sun drops toward the horizon—the guide handles the timing so you catch the light at its best. The silence of the desert is part of the experience; there is no music or noise, just the sound of the animal moving and the wind. After the ride, you walk to a nomad tent pitched on the sand where dinner is laid out around a campfire.

The meal starts with welcome tea and pastries. Then comes harira, a traditional Moroccan soup, followed by a salad, beef and chicken tagine (slow-cooked stew), and seasonal fresh fruit, all served with tea. You eat sitting on cushions around the fire in the tent, which is how the meal is meant to be taken. The guide sits with the group and explains the food and the customs; they speak your language, so nothing is lost in translation. The whole evening runs about five hours from pickup to drop-off.

After dinner, you are transferred back to your accommodation in Marrakesh in the same air-conditioned vehicle. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health, though it suits all other fitness levels. Children from age 6 can join.
