The Experience

The minibus leaves Marrakech and climbs into the Atlas foothills for about an hour. The landscape shifts from olive groves to pale rock and sparse scrub, and then you are in the Agafay Desert proper — not the Sahara, but close enough that the silence feels real. Your driver pulls into the camp where a cluster of haimas sits low against the dunes, and someone brings mint tea while you settle in. The tent is simple but solid: a bed, a heater for the cold nights, and an open flap that faces the desert.

You have a choice before sunset. Some people take a quad bike or camel ride out into the dunes (these cost extra, but they are worth asking about). Others stay at camp, sit on the cushions scattered around, and watch the light drain from the sky without moving. Either way, dinner happens around a campfire — salads, chicken tagine, vegetable couscous, something sweet — and then the show starts. Belly dancers, someone breathing fire, a gnawa musician with a sintir. It is not subtle, but it is not trying to be. The music and the dark and the fact that you are sleeping thirty kilometers from the city makes it land differently than it would in a restaurant.

Breakfast comes early, before the heat builds. You eat in or near the tent, drink more tea, and then the minibus takes you back to Marrakech by mid-morning. The pool at the camp is open all day if you want to cool off before you leave, and the whole thing — the tent, the meals, the show, the ride — is included in the price. Children under twelve are not permitted, which means the camp stays quiet and adult. If you are traveling with someone and want a private tent, the reservation holds up to four people; if you prefer to save money, dormitory tents are available too.

What’s included

Your overnight stay includes hotel pickup from Marrakech in an air-conditioned minibus, accommodation in either a private or dormitory haima tent, welcome mint tea upon arrival, a three-course Moroccan dinner with salads, chicken tagine, vegetable couscous and dessert, an evening campfire gathering, a traditional show featuring belly dancing, fire-breathing and gnawa music, breakfast the next morning, access to the camp pool, and bottled water throughout. Quad bike and camel rides are available for an additional cost.
