The experience
“Look up: see that one?” our guide Youssef grinned, pointing at a goat balanced on a branch like it was the most normal thing in the world. I squinted against the morning sun and yeah, there they were: actual goats perched in argan trees just outside Agadir. I’d seen photos before but standing there with the faint smell of earth and leaves, hearing their hooves scrape bark, it felt… odd and kind of magical. Someone behind me laughed when one goat stretched for a nut and nearly lost its balance. I probably took too many photos but honestly, how often do you see goats acting like birds?
After that we stopped at a small argan oil cooperative run by Berber women. The inside smelled nutty and warm, almost toasted. One woman showed us how she cracked open the nuts by hand (she made it look easy, I tried and just got shell everywhere). We tasted pure argan oil drizzled on bread (nutty, almost buttery), and local honey that was so floral it reminded me of spring. Youssef explained how these cooperatives support women here. He seemed genuinely proud. There was something grounding about watching hands work so patiently.
The Souk El Had market was next. It’s huge, like, really huge. Over 6,000 shops apparently, but who’s counting? The air buzzed with voices bargaining over spices and scarves. Sometimes you caught a whiff of oranges or cumin or something frying nearby. I stuck close to Youssef because I’d definitely get lost otherwise (he joked he’d rescued more tourists than he could count). He helped me haggle for some saffron: pretty sure I still overpaid but it felt right somehow. The colors and noise stayed with me long after we left.
