The Experience

I’ll be honest — I signed up for this Agadir desert safari mostly because I wanted to see ostriches up close. But the day turned out way bigger than that. Our guide, Youssef, picked us up right after breakfast (he had that calm way of driving you only get from years on these roads). The city faded fast behind us and suddenly it was all open sky and the kind of silence you don’t really get in town — just wind through the scrub and the occasional bird call. I remember the smell of wild herbs when we stopped by the first lookout; it stuck to my hands after I brushed past some low bushes.

Massa National Park is huge — bigger than I expected — and seeing gazelles darting around felt almost unreal. Youssef pointed out oryx in the distance (I needed his binoculars to spot them), and then we bounced along sandy tracks toward Sidi Rbat beach. The Atlantic was rough that day, all whitecaps and salt spray, but there were fishermen waving from their caves carved into the cliffs. We tried chatting with one guy who grinned at our French (and my terrible attempt at “choukran”). There’s something about seeing how people live out here — Berber villages tucked between dunes, kids waving as we passed through Massa town — that made me feel like an outsider in a good way.

Lunch was at a family house in Rasmouka: tajine bubbling away, couscous so fluffy it almost disappeared on your tongue, mint tea poured high so it cooled just right. I still think about that meal sometimes when I smell cumin back home. Afterward we watched pottery being shaped by hand — not for show, just someone doing their daily work while we looked on awkwardly until he smiled and offered us a go (my bowl was… not round). The drive back took us past Yusuf Ibnu Tachafin dam with those wide views over the Anti Atlas mountains. It’s hard to explain but there’s this quietness you carry with you after a day like that.
