The experience

The route starts in Casablanca with Hassan II Mosque, one of the world's largest and one of the few Moroccan mosques open to non-Muslims. From there you move north to Rabat, the capital, to see Hassan Tower and the Chellah site, then continue to Fez for a full day exploring the Royal Palace (Dar El Makhzen), the Fez Mellah (Morocco's oldest Jewish quarter, founded in 1438), and the Kairaouine Mosque, a university and spiritual center since 857.

Day three takes you south toward the Sahara. You pass through Ifrane, a mountain town at 1,700 meters in the Middle Atlas, then descend to Merzouga, a gateway to Erg Chebbi's sand dunes. You ride a camel through the golden dunes and spend the night in a desert camp, eating Berber dinner with other travelers. The following day moves through Rissani's souks and into the gorges: Todra Gorge, which stretches 30 kilometers at 1,300 meters altitude, and Dades Gorge, where you stay overnight in Boumales.

The final stretch heads west through the Valley of Roses toward Ouarzazate, then to the Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou: a UNESCO site of earthen buildings and defensive walls that has served as a film location for major productions. You cross Tizi-n'Tichka Pass through the High Atlas, arriving in Marrakech for your last night before the transfer back to Casablanca airport on day six.
