The experience
The tour starts with a thirty-minute drive to Perast, a steep-stoned village built by wealthy seafaring families in the 17th century. You'll walk past Baroque palaces, Catholic and Orthodox churches, and flower-lined streets that attracted writers and painters for centuries. The village sits across the water from two islands: St. George and Our Lady of the Shells, both visible from the main square.
From Perast, a boat takes you out to Our Lady of the Rocks, an artificial island created by local sailors who ferried stones across the bay to build it. A church was constructed on the island in 1630 and still stands there. The tradition of bringing stones continues today, renewed each July 22nd in a ceremony called Fasinada. Your guide explains how the island became the patroness of Bokele sailors embarking on long journeys.
The final stop is Kotor's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site enclosed by a 4.5 km defensive wall. You enter through the Sea Gate, where an old clock tower marks the entrance, and walk past the Cathedral of St. Tripun before exploring the squares and narrow alleys. The tour ends with time to sit in the main square with a coffee before your return to Kotor.
