The experience

Khustai National Park sits roughly an hour's drive west of Ulaanbaatar, and the day starts at the Mongol Nomadic Show before heading there. You watch yak-cart migrations, felt-making demonstrations, and listen to traditional songs while guides explain the daily chores and rhythms of nomadic life as it was lived in the early 20th century. Lunch and traditional drinks are served on-site, so you taste what nomadic herders ate alongside the cultural display.

After lunch, the drive takes you into Khustai National Park, where the real draw is the wild horses. Przewalski's horses went extinct in the wild by the 1950s. The only survivors were descendants of animals captured for European zoos in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1993, a small number of those descendants were reintroduced to their ancestral homeland. Today, a few hundred wild horses, all born in Mongolia, live in the park alongside red deer, Mongolian gazelles, wild sheep, and marmots. Your guide walks through the conservation program in detail before you head out to spot them, explaining the challenges they face from predators and the region's harsh climate.

The guide speaks English, German, or Russian, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included so you don't need a car or navigate transport yourself. Drinking water comes with the tour. Bring sunscreen and binoculars if you have them, as the park is open grassland.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, German and Russian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 17 years). Children under 3 can't be included in the booking.

What exactly happens at the Mongol Nomadic Show?

The show recreates early 20th-century nomadic life with live demonstrations of yak-cart migration, felt-making, and traditional daily chores. You watch these activities unfold, listen to traditional songs and music, and taste traditional Mongolian food and drinks served during the experience.

Are Przewalski's wild horses actually wild, or are they in an enclosure?

Przewalski's horses roam free in Khustai National Park across open grassland. The population was reintroduced to the wild in 1993 after the species went extinct in nature by the 1950s, and today a few hundred live there, born and raised in Mongolia, surviving predators and the region's climate on their own.

How much of the day is spent driving versus at each stop?

The full day runs 8 to 9 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. You spend the morning at the Mongol Nomadic Show with lunch included, then drive to Khustai National Park for the afternoon wildlife-watching excursion and conservation briefing.

What should I bring for the park visit?

Khustai National Park is open grassland with no shade, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and water (drinking water is provided, but extra is useful). Binoculars help with spotting horses and other wildlife at a distance. Wear comfortable walking shoes and layers, as weather can change.
