The experience

The hike takes 3–4 hours on a trail of moderate difficulty, climbing through mixed forests and alpine meadows to reach Tsetsee Gun, the highest point of the Bogd Khan range. Bogd Khan Mountain marks the southern edge of the Siberian ecosystem and is a strictly protected natural park. The granite cliffs and views across the forest make the peak a natural place to stop for lunch. You'll eat on the summit with drinking water provided, then descend the same route.

After the hike, you visit Manzushir Monastery, which was built in 1733 and heavily damaged during anti-religion campaigns in the 1930s. The main temple building has been recently renovated and now functions as a museum. You'll also see sections of shattered walls, stone foundations, terraces and niches carved into the cliffs. The site sits on the edge of the mountain range, so the walk through it connects the high-altitude hike to the monastery's history in one trip.

Your guide meets you at your hotel in Ulaanbaatar and drives you to the trailhead at the monastery ruins, where the hike begins. Trekking poles are provided. The full day runs 7–9 hours from pickup to drop-off, with the return to the city in late afternoon.
