Cycle through open valleys and visit working nomadic camps on the same day you see the world's tallest equestrian statue.

A full-day mountain biking tour from Ulaanbaatar takes you 70 km east to the 40-meter Genghis Khan Statue, where you pick up a hardtail bike and ride 52 km through Khan Khenty National Park's hilly steppe terrain. You'll cycle past animal herds, stop at nomadic ger camps to meet families, take a tea break around the 12 km mark, and eat lunch at the 26 km point before finishing at a hilltop with ovoos (sacred stone cairns). An English-speaking guide leads the ride. A support vehicle carries your bike back to Ulaanbaatar and drops you at your hotel. The tour runs 6 to 8 hours and includes the statue entrance fee, bike, water, snacks and lunch.

The experience

The day starts with an early pickup from your hotel and a 70 km drive east across the steppe to the Genghis Khan Statue complex. The statue itself is 40 meters tall, stainless steel, and mounted on horseback: the world's largest equestrian sculpture. You'll have time to climb up to the horse's head for a panoramic view of the grasslands, visit the small museum, and browse the souvenir shop. While you're exploring, your guide assembles the bikes: Giant ATX 600 series hardtail with Shimano 3x7 gearing, built for the terrain you're about to ride.

Once the bikes are ready, you start cycling on dirt roads through hilly steppe. The first 12 km takes you up and down small rises. Your guide stops for tea around this point. At 26 km you break for lunch. The route passes through valleys where you'll see domestic animals grazing and Mongolian felt gers scattered across the landscape. You can stop at working nomadic family camps to watch how they live. This is not a museum or a staged visit, but actual families going about their day. The terrain stays rolling and open. You're cycling slowly downhill through much of the second half. At 52 km, the ride ends at the top of a small hill marked by ovoos, stone cairns used in Mongolian spiritual practice.

From there, the support vehicle loads your bike and you drive back to Ulaanbaatar, arriving at your hotel or starting point. Bottled water and snacks travel with you throughout the day. The guide speaks English and stays with the group the entire time. Bring your own cycling clothes and accessories. The operator provides the bike, helmet setup, and all food and water.

Top questions

How far is the actual cycling, and how much of the day is spent riding versus driving?

You cycle 52 km total, split across the morning and afternoon with a lunch break at the 26 km mark and a tea stop around 12 km. The drive to and from the statue complex takes about 2 hours round trip, so roughly 4 to 5 hours of the 6 to 8 hour day is on the bike or at stops along the route.

What is the Genghis Khan Statue complex, and do I have to climb it?

The Genghis Khan Statue is a 40-meter tall stainless-steel sculpture of a mounted warrior: the world's tallest equestrian statue. It sits in a complex with a small museum and souvenir shop. Climbing to the horse's head is optional. A lift takes you partway up, and then stairs lead to the top for a view of the surrounding grasslands.

Can I actually visit the nomadic families, or is it just riding past their camps?

You can stop and visit working nomadic ger camps along the cycling route. These are real families living on the steppe, not tourist attractions, so visits depend on whether families are home and willing to receive visitors on the day you ride.

What kind of bike do I get, and is it suitable for someone who hasn't mountain biked before?

You ride a Giant ATX 600 series hardtail with Shimano 3x7 gearing: a sturdy, entry-level mountain bike designed for dirt roads and rolling terrain. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, and the guide sets a slow pace, especially on the downhill sections.

What happens if I can't complete the full 52 km?

The support vehicle travels with the group, so if you need a break or cannot continue, the driver can pick you up and you can rest in the vehicle or ride ahead to the finish point.
