Kayaking in Xochimilco: sunrise paddle with guide
Two to three hours paddling the oldest canals of Xochimilco at sunrise
Kayaking in Xochimilco is a guided paddle through the ecological reserve's main channels—Laguna de Teshuilo, Isla de las Muñecas and Canal de Apampilco—timed to catch the sunrise. A specialized guide trains you on the kayak before departure and stays with you throughout, pointing out the traditional chiampas (floating gardens) built by the Xochimilca civilization and the trajineras (wooden boats) that still ply the water. Life jacket and kayak are provided; the tour runs 2 to 3 hours. Breakfast with local products is available for an additional cost.
Step-by-step itinerary
Kayak tour through Xochimilco canals

- Cross Island of the Dolls
- Explore Apampilco Canal
- See traditional trajineras
- Return to meeting point
The Experience
A guide meets you at the starting point and walks you through kayak basics before you push off into the water. The paddle begins early enough to catch the sunrise over the wetlands, weather permitting, and takes you through the main channels of Xochimilco—starting at Laguna de Teshuilo, a lagoon locals have gathered at for centuries during Holy Week celebrations. From there you paddle toward Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls), the second major stop, where you'll see the original island created by Julián Santana and understand why it has become a landmark in the reserve.
The route then moves into Canal de Apampilco, one of the oldest waterways in Xochimilco, where the guide explains the Aplantles—the biodiversity that makes the wetland system work. As you paddle, you'll pass the chiampas, the narrow farming plots built on the water where locals still grow flowers and vegetables using techniques unchanged since pre-Hispanic times. You'll also watch trajineras—the flat-bottomed wooden boats that are the traditional transport here—moving through the same channels you're paddling. The guide speaks English and Spanish, so navigation and history come through clearly. The paddle returns you to the meeting point after 2 to 3 hours on the water.
