The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the clatter of mariachis tuning up somewhere behind us—honestly, I hadn’t even sat down on the trajinera yet. The air in Xochimilco is thick with the smell of corn masa and flowers drifting from other boats. Our guide, Marisol, waved us over with a grin and handed out little cups of something sweet (I think it was atole?). We pushed off and suddenly it was all color—bright boats bumping past, people laughing, vendors calling out for us to try their tamales. I kept thinking: this is what weekends should feel like.

After an hour floating through those old canals (and yes, you can buy snacks or even a plastic flower crown from passing boats), we headed for Coyoacán. The vibe changed completely—cobblestones underfoot, shaded plazas full of families and street dogs dozing wherever they liked. Marisol told stories about Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo as we wandered past painted walls and tiny bakeries. I got distracted by the smell of churros frying somewhere nearby and almost lost the group at one point—worth it though. There’s this market where you can just sit with a coffee or poke through piles of books no one else seems to want.

We finished outside the Frida Kahlo Museum—the Blue House really is that blue, by the way—and took photos while Marisol explained how Frida grew up there. If you want to go inside you need tickets ahead (I didn’t plan that far in advance), but just standing outside felt like enough for me that day. The sun was starting to drop behind the houses when we left; I still think about those colors sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
