The experience

Tabor Canyon sits inside Loreto Bay National Park, and the route climbs steeply from the start. You'll scramble over massive boulders, cross pools of water, and pick your way up crumbling rock ridges. The terrain is technical enough that you need at least moderate fitness and sure footing. The payoff comes at higher elevations, where the views open across Puerto Escondido toward the Sea of Cortez. An eco-oriented guide leads the way and talks through the desert's plant and animal life as you move through the canyon.

The operator picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and drives you to the trailhead. During the hike itself, you get water, soda and PowerAde to drink, plus snacks. The whole outing (drive, hike and return) takes three hours. The guide is available in English or Spanish, and children from age 8 are welcome if they can handle the scrambling and the elevation gain.
