The experience
About 3 hours in the water is the window you get from the moment your boat reaches the whale shark zone until you're back on land. You start at the Fiscal Dock in La Paz, and the search begins once you arrive in the designated area near El Mogote, a sandbar where plankton draws these ocean giants from November through April. The water is shallow and calm (built for snorkeling, not diving), so you move at the pace the whale sharks set as they drift through their feeding ground.
Groups stay small: five people per boat, which means you're not jostling for position or waiting your turn to get close. Snorkeling gear comes with you. All you bring is a willingness to get in the water and a valid time slot. The slot itself is the catch: park rangers assign the first and second slots the day before at 3 pm, and the third and fourth slots the morning of your trip at 7 am. Not every boat gets a slot every day, so the operator asks you to build flexibility into your schedule. Book the activity and stay ready to go when the rangers call your time.
You'll meet at 7:15 am typically, though this shifts depending on which slot your boat draws. A live guide speaks English, Spanish or French and stays with your group the whole time. Bottled water is included. Bring sunscreen and a towel.

Is this one for you? You're snorkeling in a small group with a guide, not watching from a boat, so you control how close you get and how long you stay in the water. The trade-off is the time slot: park rangers assign them, and you need to stay flexible on your trip dates to match the assignment. Book this activity knowing you may need to shift other plans by a day or two.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and French.
When can I actually see whale sharks in La Paz?
Whale sharks gather near El Mogote from November through April, when plankton blooms create their feeding ground. Outside those months, the activity does not run.
How does the time slot system work for this snorkeling trip?
Park rangers assign slots in two batches: the first and second time slots are assigned the day before at 3 pm, and the third and fourth slots the same morning at 7 am. Not every boat receives a slot every day, so you need flexibility on your trip dates to accommodate the assignment.
What's included in the snorkeling gear, and do I need my own equipment?
All snorkeling equipment is provided. You don't bring your own. Bottled water is also included, along with all fees and taxes.
How big are the groups, and will I be crowded with other snorkelers?
Groups stay at five people per boat, keeping the experience manageable and giving everyone a chance to observe the whale sharks without competing for space.
Do I need snorkeling experience to do this activity?
The activity is suitable for all physical fitness levels and is described as accessible to both experienced snorkelers and first-timers. The shallow, calm waters near El Mogote are designed for comfortable observation.
