The Experience

The panga boat leaves La Paz at dawn, and within an hour you're past the coastline into water that doesn't look like much until it moves. Between March and June, vast aggregations of mobula rays gather in the Sea of Cortez around Espíritu Santo Island and Cerralvo Island — sometimes thousands of them — and the captain knows where to find them. The boat cuts through the swells, and your guide scans the surface for the telltale ripples that mean rays are feeding just below. When they breach, it's not one or two; it's dozens at once, their bodies flipping out of the water in a synchronized wave that happens so fast you're not sure you saw it until someone hands you the camera footage.

The five-hour safari isn't a guarantee of anything — the ocean decides what shows up on any given day — but that's what makes it real.
