The experience
The route starts with a pickup in Querétaro before noon and a drive to Ahuacatlan de Guadalupe, a small mountain village 3 hours away in the Sierra Gorda range. Once you arrive, the hostel staff show you to your room, then you move straight into a practical induction class where you learn rappelling technique, communication signals, what you can and cannot do inside the canyon, and how to use the harness and descent systems. The class happens on real rock so you feel the equipment work before you're on a waterfall. After that, the evening is yours: dinner is free time in town, and you rest for the early start.
Day two begins at 7:30 am with breakfast (not included in the meal plan, but the town has local options). You gear up in the supplied 3mm neoprene, flotation vest, helmet, gloves and harness, then head into the canyon with your guide. The route covers five kilometers of hiking, jumping into pools, rappelling down waterfalls, swimming and sliding through natural chutes: more than 10 rappels in total. The guide stays with you the entire time, managing safety and pacing. The canyon is called Infiernillo (Little Hell) for the intensity of the terrain, not the temperature. The water is cold and the rock is steep, but the guide controls the descent and the flotation vest keeps you safe in the pools.
Ahuacatlan de Guadalupe is a very small town with no ATMs and limited card acceptance, so bring cash in Mexican pesos. Public transportation runs to the area, but the tour includes pickup from Querétaro. The guide speaks English or Spanish, so you choose the language at booking. Food at the end of the tour is included. Transportation back to Querétaro and any tips are your choice.
