The experience

You meet in the parking lot at Peña de Bernal, get fitted with a climbing helmet, shoes, harness and chalk bag, and spend time with your guide reviewing your climbing experience so the day can be planned around what you're ready for. The guide manages a maximum of four climbers, which means real attention to how you're moving and what you need to find success on the rock. After everyone is outfitted, you hike to the base of the monolith and begin climbing.

Whether the day unfolds as a series of single-pitch climbs or a full multi-pitch big wall route depends on the group's ability and what your guide reads as you go. The guide watches how each climber is moving, adjusts the difficulty and the pacing, and makes sure everyone reaches moments where they feel what they came for: the problem solved, the pitch topped, the day earned. You're climbing actual rock on an actual monolith, not a gym wall or a bolted sport crag somewhere else. The stone and the height and the exposure are real.

The full day runs eight hours from the parking lot. Bring water and snacks. The entry fee to Peña de Bernal is 30 pesos, paid separately. Public transportation reaches the area, and the guide is available in English or Spanish.
