The experience
How do you get started if you've never paddled before? You meet at the meeting point and head to the river, where the guide gives an introductory talk and a brief lesson on kayak handling before you put on your gear and practice. The class 1 rapids are designed for people with no experience, so the focus is on learning the basics safely while you get comfortable with the paddle and the water.
Once you're ready, the descent begins through the Santa María River. You'll paddle through quiet pools where the landscape, flora and fauna of the Sierra Gorda come into view, then hit the most exciting part: Los Rápidos, where you practice what you learned, riding the waves and feeling the speed of the water. Halfway through, you stop at a pool surrounded by abundant nature to swim and relax before continuing. The paddle ends where the Ayutla River meets the Santa María.
The four-and-a-half-hour timeframe means you can fit this into a morning or early afternoon without losing the rest of your day in Querétaro. Bring your own clothing and footwear. You can pack a small snack for the break or buy supplies at a store near the meeting point. Children are welcome from age 11, and the activity suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns.
