The experience

“This tree has seen more years than any of us will ever count,” our guide Mario said, patting the thick bark of the Tule Tree like he was greeting an old friend. I didn’t expect to feel much about a tree, but standing under its tangled green shadow at the start of our Oaxaca day trip, it felt like time slowed down for a second. The air smelled faintly sweet and earthy: maybe from the morning dew or the little food stalls nearby selling tamales. People took turns craning their necks up at the branches, some laughing when they tried to spot animal shapes in the knots (I swear I saw a lion’s face but no one else agreed).

Mitla was next. The drive wasn’t long, maybe half an hour? Hard to tell because Mario kept us busy with stories about Zapotec kings and how those mosaic walls were built without mortar.
