The Experience

“This tree has seen more years than any of us will ever count,” our guide Mario said, patting the thick bark of the Tule Tree like he was greeting an old friend. I didn’t expect to feel much about a tree, but standing under its tangled green shadow at the start of our Oaxaca day trip, it felt like time slowed down for a second. The air smelled faintly sweet and earthy—maybe from the morning dew or the little food stalls nearby selling tamales. People took turns craning their necks up at the branches, some laughing when they tried to spot animal shapes in the knots (I swear I saw a lion’s face but no one else agreed).

Mitla was next. The drive wasn’t long—maybe half an hour? Hard to tell because Mario kept us busy with stories about Zapotec kings and how those mosaic walls were built without mortar. He pointed out tiny details in the stonework that I’d have missed on my own. There was this moment where I just ran my fingers along one of those ancient patterns—cool and rough at the same time—and thought about how many hands had done exactly that over centuries. It’s strange how quiet it felt there, even with other groups around.

We stopped for lunch somewhere local (not included in the price), and I tried mole negro for the first time—smoky, spicy, totally different from what I expected. Everyone at our table swapped bites and compared notes on which mezcal we liked best later at the family distillery. The owner’s daughter poured us tiny glasses and laughed when I tried to say “espadín” right—pretty sure I butchered it. Mezcal burned a little going down but left this grassy aftertaste that stuck around all afternoon.

Hierve el Agua was honestly surreal—a pale blue pool perched above these white cliffs that look frozen mid-cascade. We had free time to wander or just sit on a rock and watch clouds drift past. Some people hiked down for photos; I just let my feet dangle over the edge for a while. The wind picked up and you could smell minerals in the air—sharp, almost metallic. On the way back through Teotitlán del Valle, we watched a weaving demo with natural dyes; cochineal beetles crushed into bright red powder right in front of us. Kind of wild how much color can come from something so small.
