The experience

We were already laughing by the time we squeezed into the van outside Oaxaca. I’d barely finished my coffee when our guide, Luis (he’s part of the Lescas family who runs this), started sharing little stories about his childhood in Teotitlán del Valle. First stop was that famous tree, El Tule. It’s honestly massive, even bigger than I pictured, and there’s this odd hush around it, like everyone’s trying to hear if it’ll creak or whisper something old. We didn’t linger long, just enough for a few awkward group selfies. The air smelled faintly sweet, maybe from the flowers people left at its roots?

Mitla came next. The light was sharp that morning. It made the stone fretwork almost glow. Luis pointed out patterns on the palace walls, he called them “grecas”, and explained how each one means something different. I got lost staring at those designs, thinking about all the hands that carved them centuries ago. There was a moment when he paused and let us just stand in silence, which felt right somehow. Entry was quick (bring pesos for tickets), and after his stories we had some free time to wander on our own. I tried to sketch one of the patterns but gave up halfway through.

I didn’t expect to care much about rugs but visiting the workshop in Teotitlán del Valle surprised me. The family there still uses natural dyes (cochineal beetles crushed into this deep red powder), and the grandma showed us how she rubbed it between her fingers until her thumb turned pinkish-red. The smell of wool hung in the air, mixed with wood smoke from their kitchen next door. Li laughed when I tried to say “grana cochinilla” in Spanish, definitely butchered it. Lunch was at a buffet place nearby. Lots of moles and tlayudas (I went back for seconds). And then we drifted back toward Oaxaca city, tired but sort of full in every sense. Sometimes I catch myself remembering that quiet at Mitla or how proud Luis looked talking about his village.
