The Experience

We were already laughing by the time we squeezed into the van outside Oaxaca. It’s honestly massive, even bigger than I pictured, and there’s this odd hush around it, like everyone’s trying to hear if it’ll creak or whisper something old. We didn’t linger long, just enough for a few awkward group selfies. The air smelled faintly sweet—maybe from the flowers people left at its roots?

Mitla came next. The light was sharp that morning; it made the stone fretwork almost glow. Luis pointed out patterns on the palace walls—he called them “grecas”—and explained how each one means something different. I got lost staring at those designs, thinking about all the hands that carved them centuries ago. There was a moment when he paused and let us just stand in silence, which felt right somehow. Entry was quick (bring pesos for tickets), and after his stories we had some free time to wander on our own—I tried to sketch one of the patterns but gave up halfway through.

I didn’t expect to care much about rugs but visiting the workshop in Teotitlán del Valle surprised me. Lunch was at a buffet place nearby; lots of moles and tlayudas (I went back for seconds). And then we drifted back toward Oaxaca city, tired but sort of full in every sense.
