The experience
The tour starts at Bike Flow Oaxaca shop, where you meet the guides, get fitted to a premium MTB hardtail with 100mm suspension, and go over the route before heading out. From there you ride through ancient and hidden ruins scattered across the Central Valleys, with views opening across the countryside as you climb and descend on intermediate gravel. The pace is set by the group (no more than six riders per guide), so there's time to stop and take in the landscape.
Teotitlán del Valle sits halfway through the day. You'll explore the village and have time to eat at its local food market (bring around 150 Mexican pesos in cash if you want lunch there). The final major stop is the Tule Tree, an ancient cypress with deep cultural roots in Oaxaca. The guides explain its history and significance, and you can walk the surrounding area before heading back. The whole ride takes five to six hours, including stops.
What's included covers the logistics: a helmet with MIPS technology, accident insurance, access to the Tule Tree site, coffee or juice and a tamal or fruit at the market, plus an energy bar, electrolytes and water during the ride. If something breaks, mechanical assistance is on hand. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness and some bike handling skills (this is intermediate gravel, not a flat cruise), and a minimum of two people must book for the tour to run.
