The experience

You get picked up from your hotel in Bacalar while it's still dark, then head to the launch point to paddle out before sunrise. As the sky lights up over the water, you're on the lagoon with a guide who speaks both English and Spanish, paddling across the Pirate Channel. The stretch of water Bacalar is known for. The water is shallow and clear enough to see the bottom, and the guide points out the mangroves lining the shore and explains what lives in them. You'll have time to stop, swim, and float in the lagoon's calm water before heading back.

After paddling, breakfast waits: fresh seasonal fruit, marmalade toast, coffee, tea, and more. The guide stays with you the whole time, sharing stories about Bacalar's history and the legends tied to the Pirate Channel. You're equipped with a paddleboard, life jacket, dry bag, and snorkeling mask if you want to look closer at the water.
