The Experience
We met our guide just outside La Casa China Bacalar before the sky even started to change color. I was still a bit groggy — 6:30 am is not my usual hour for anything, honestly — but there was something about the quiet at that time, like the lagoon was holding its breath. Our small group stretched out on the dock while the guide (I think her name was Mar) explained how to use the paddle boards. I tried to look confident but nearly lost my balance just standing up. She grinned and said everyone wobbles at first.
The water was so glassy it almost didn’t look real, more like a mirror than a lake. Paddling over Cenote Esmeralda felt weirdly weightless — you can see straight down into this deep blue hole right under your board, which is both beautiful and a little unsettling if you overthink it. Mar pointed out some ancient rock formations (stromatolites? I hope I’m spelling that right), explaining why they matter for the lagoon’s health. She really cared about this place — you could tell by how she talked about keeping it clean and quiet.
As we made our way toward Bird Island, the sun finally cracked over the horizon. Everything went gold for a minute; even my arms stopped complaining. We floated near the island, listening to birds waking up — no crowds, just us and a few distant splashes. Jumping in felt amazing after paddling so long; the water is warm but somehow still wakes you up more than coffee does.
Back at shore, there was fresh fruit and coffee waiting for us (the pineapple tasted sweeter than usual—maybe because I’d actually earned it). I’m not really a morning person but I still think about that sunrise sometimes, how peaceful it all felt before the rest of Bacalar woke up.
