We were already laughing when we climbed onto our camels — I’d never been this close to one before, and their eyelashes are honestly kind of hypnotic. The guide, Luis, showed us how to sit so we wouldn’t slide off (I almost did anyway when my camel sneezed). The ocean was right there, all silvery-blue and loud, and I could smell salt and something sweet from the ranch kitchen drifting over. For a second it felt like we were the only people on that whole stretch of Cabo San Lucas beach. I kept glancing out for whales — apparently winter is the season for it — but mostly just watched pelicans skimming the water.
After the camel ride (which was way gentler than I expected), we wandered up to the Tierra Sagrada beach club. The pool was cool and empty except for two kids doing cannonballs. Someone handed me a cold beer before I even sat down. There’s this buffet — tacos, grilled fish, little bowls of spicy salsa — and you can go back as many times as you want. I tried to help with tortillas in the cooking class but mostly just made a mess; Li laughed when I tried to say “masa” in Spanish. She’s better at languages than me.
The kids disappeared into the adventure park for hours. Every time I looked up they were somewhere else: zipping across ropes or chasing goats at the mini farm (the guacamayas are louder than you’d think). It’s easy to lose track of time here — sun on your face, music from somewhere behind the bar, that lazy feeling after too much food and not enough swimming. We left with sand everywhere and about fifty photos of camels and donkeys on my phone. Sometimes I still think about that quiet moment by the sea, just us and those big gentle animals.
