The experience

The tour starts with Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcano in Curepipe with a crater 80 meters deep and a cone that rises 605 meters. From there the route moves through the island's interior to Grand Bassin, the sacred crater lake where Hindu pilgrims gather for prayer and religious festivals. The guide navigates the full day across the southern region, stopping at each site long enough to walk the grounds and take in the landscape without rushing between them.

Alexandra Falls sits 700 meters above sea level and is one of the island's most photographed sights. The route then enters Black River Gorges National Park, a 67.54 square kilometer reserve of humid upland forest and marshy heathland established in 1994. Chamarel Waterfall, the tallest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius at 100 meters, flows at peak rates exceeding 40,000 cubic meters per minute, fed by three separate streams that pour into the Saint Denis River. The final stop is the Seven Colored Earth at Chamarel, where the sand displays seven distinct geological colors.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks English or French throughout the day. Bottled water is provided. If you want lunch, the driver stops at a local Mauritian restaurant where you can order real Mauritian dishes. The cost is separate. Entrance fees to Chamarel Geo Park and the Rhumerie Chamarel are not included in the tour price.
