Dolphins at dawn, then clifftop views and afternoon adventure

This private tour of Mauritius combines swimming with wild dolphins in their natural habitat, a stop at Macondé's iconic coastal viewpoint, and an afternoon at La Vallée des Couleurs adventure park. You start on the open sea near Tamarin Bay with a professional skipper, then move to the park's quad bikes, zip lines, jeep tours and suspension bridges, with time to snorkel near coral if the schedule allows.

Step-by-step itinerary

Wild dolphins, viewpoint, and adventure park

  • Briefing on dolphin swimming
  • Swim with wild dolphins at Tamarin Bay
  • Visit The Aquarium for snorkeling
  • Drive to Macondé viewpoint
  • Explore La Vallée des Couleurs Adventure Park

The experience

The morning centers on Tamarin Bay, where you board a speedboat with a qualified skipper who briefs you on what to expect before heading out to meet the dolphins in their natural environment. You'll spend roughly two hours on the water viewing and swimming alongside them, and depending on timing, the boat stops at The Aquarium, a snorkeling site with coral and tropical fish where gear is provided. The dolphin portion is shared with other travelers, but the rest of the day is private: your own driver handles the route and timing.

Macondé sits on the south-west coast where the road curves sharply along a cliff, making it one of Mauritius's most photographed spots. The stop is brief, built into the drive between the bay and the afternoon activity, so you get the view without a long detour.

La Vallée des Couleurs fills the afternoon. The park's centerpiece is the 23-coloured earth formation, but the real draw is the activity menu: quad biking, zip lining, jeep tours, buggy rides, trekking and suspension bridges. You choose what appeals and how long to spend on each one. The park also has views toward the south. Because the tour runs up to eight hours and you control the pace at each stop (except the dolphin portion), you may not fit every activity, so prioritize before you go. Lunch is available in the area but costs extra.

Is this one for you?The dolphin swim happens early and takes up most of the morning, so you're in the water before 9am and back on land by early afternoon. The afternoon activities at La Vallée des Couleurs let you set your own pace, but because the full tour runs up to eight hours and you control timing at each stop, you may not have time for every activity. Choose your priorities before the day starts.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and French.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are the chances of actually seeing dolphins on this tour?

In almost all cases (90%+) you will see the dolphins. If they don't appear, the operator offers a second outing on the boat at no charge, though transport to and from your hotel for that second trip is not included.

Is snorkeling included, or do I need to bring my own gear?

Snorkeling near the coral reef is included if time permits after the dolphin swim, and snorkeling gear is provided. The stop at The Aquarium depends on how much of the two-hour dolphin window you use.

Can I choose which activities to do at La Vallée des Couleurs, or is there a set itinerary?

You choose how long to spend at each attraction in the afternoon. The park offers quad biking, zip lining, jeep tours, buggy rides, trekking and suspension bridges, so you can pick based on what interests you and how much time you want to spend.

What's Macondé actually like as a stop?

Macondé is a viewpoint on the south-west coast where the road curves sharply around a cliff overlooking the ocean. It's one of Mauritius's most photographed spots, but the stop is brief. It's built into the drive between the bay and the afternoon park.

How long does the dolphin portion take, and what happens if I'm not a strong swimmer?

The dolphin encounter lasts roughly two hours on the open sea. The skipper will accompany you in the water and brief you on safety before you enter, so you don't need to be an expert swimmer, but you should be comfortable in the water.
