The Experience

The air felt salty and warm as we boarded the boat just after sunrise—Mauritius mornings have this gentle light that makes the ocean look almost silver. Our guide, Raj, handed out snorkel masks and gave us a quick rundown. He’s lived here his whole life and knows these waters like the back of his hand. We set off, engine humming quietly, and within half an hour, dolphins started to appear—sleek shapes darting just ahead of us. I slid into the water, heart pounding a bit, and suddenly there they were: wild dolphins gliding past, close enough to hear their clicks and whistles underwater.

After the swim, we cruised toward Crystal Rock. It really does jut out of nowhere—a chunk of coral in the middle of turquoise water, with Le Morne mountain in the background. The snorkeling here is something else: schools of tiny fish flickering around your legs, sunlight making patterns on the sand below. Raj pointed out a sea cucumber (which I’d never seen before) and told us how locals believe it brings good luck.

Lunchtime meant anchoring at Benitiers Islet. There’s a faint smell of charcoal from the BBQ even before you step ashore. Tables were set up under some shady trees, and we tucked into grilled chicken, fresh fish, and veggie skewers—there was even a separate grill for halal food. Drinks kept coming (local Phoenix beer if you want it), and someone played sega music on a small speaker nearby. After eating way too much, I just lay back on the sand for a while—there’s nothing like that lazy feeling after swimming and sun. Some folks wandered off to collect shells or dip their toes in the shallows; nobody seemed in any rush to leave.
