The Experience
If you have a free afternoon in Valletta and want to see where the Knights of St. John actually settled — not just read about it — this tour crosses the harbour to the Three Cities and puts you on foot in the oldest streets. You start in Vittoriosa, walking through narrow lanes in the shade of historic buildings, past the first auberges where the different langues of the Order made their headquarters. The guide walks you through the layout and the history without rushing; the streets are tight enough that you stay cool even in the heat of the day.
At the Vittoriosa waterfront you board a dghajsa — the traditional painted harbour boat that has worked these creeks for centuries — and drift past the colourful inlets and the fortifications that ring the Grand Harbour. From the water, the scale of the defences becomes clear in a way a photograph never quite captures. The boat then heads to Senglea Garden, at the tip of the peninsula, where you step out onto a platform with a 360° view of the entire harbour. Fort Sant Angelo sits across the water — the fortress from which Grand Master La Valette commanded the defence during the Great Siege of 1565. Standing there, you can trace the lines of sight and the geography that made the siege possible and the victory unlikely.
The tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive and the transfers, and a live guide who speaks your language — English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Dutch or Russian depending on which departure you pick. Pickup from your Valletta hotel is included, so you don't arrange the transport yourself.

What exactly is a dghajsa and what does the boat ride show you?
A dghajsa is a traditional Maltese harbour boat, painted in bright colours, that has been used in the Grand Harbour for centuries. The ride takes you through the colourful creeks and inlets around Vittoriosa and Senglea, giving you a water-level view of the fortifications and the scale of the harbour that you cannot get from the shore.
How much walking is involved and what are the streets of Vittoriosa actually like?
The walking tour through Vittoriosa covers the narrow streets in the shade of historic buildings, including the first auberges of the various langues of the Order. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and the tight lanes keep you shaded even on a hot day — the walking is steady but not strenuous.
What is Fort Sant Angelo and why does it matter?
Fort Sant Angelo is the fortress on the peninsula across the harbour where Grand Master La Valette led the defence of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565. You see it from the Senglea Garden at the tip of the peninsula, where the 360° view of the Grand Harbour lets you understand the geography and the strategy of the siege.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to the Three Cities, or is pickup included?
Pickup from your Valletta hotel is included in the tour, and an air-conditioned vehicle takes you to Vittoriosa and handles the transfers between the walking sections and the boat. You don't arrange the transport yourself.
What languages does the guide speak, and can I choose?
The tour runs in English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Dutch and Russian. You choose your language when you book — each departure has a live guide in one of those languages.
How long does the whole tour take?
The tour runs for 4 hours from pickup to drop-off, including the walking in Vittoriosa, the dghajsa boat ride, and the stop at Senglea Garden.
