The Experience

The tour opens with a panoramic drive past Cospicua, the largest and most heavily fortified of the three cities, ringed by the Santa Margherita Lines and the Cottonera Lines. You won't stop there, but the scale of the fortifications — built by the Order of the Knights of Saint John in the 17th century — sets the context for what follows. From there the guide takes you into Vittoriosa, the oldest of the three, whose history reaches back to the Middle Ages. The narrow winding streets climb and turn; you'll see the historical buildings and architectural detail at street level, the kind of thing a drive-by misses entirely.

At the Vittoriosa Waterfront, you board a traditional Maltese carvel-built fishing boat — a small wooden vessel, not a tour catamaran — for a tour of the coloured harbour creeks. From the water, Fort Saint Angelo rises at the tip of the Vittoriosa promontory, the command post from which Jean Perisot De La Valette directed the island's defence during the Great Siege. The boat trip depends on weather; if the sea is rough, the guide reroutes the time into more walking and more of the cities. Either way, you end at Senglea, founded in the 16th century by Claude De La Sengle and known as "Civitas Invicta" for resisting the Ottoman invasion in 1565.

The final walk takes you through Senglea's streets and ends at the Gardjola Gardens, perched at the peninsula's tip. From there, the Grand Harbour opens in all directions — Fort Saint Angelo straight across, the fortifications of all three cities visible at once, the geography of the siege suddenly clear. The whole tour runs four hours from pickup to drop-off. A licensed guide conducts it in your chosen language — English, Spanish, Italian, French or German — though in some cases a multilingual guide may provide commentary in up to two languages depending on the group.
